Post a message to a Discord channel whenever your site fails to send an email, using a channel webhook.

This article shows you how to send CRM-NG SMTP failure alerts to a Discord channel. It is for teams and communities that use Discord to keep an eye on their website.

Discord alerts go straight from your web server to Discord. They do not use your mail service, so they still work when the mail service is the thing that broke.

## Before you start

- You need the **Manage Webhooks** permission on the Discord server, or be its owner.
- Choose a text channel for the alerts. A private channel such as `#website-alerts` keeps error details away from the public.

## Step 1: Create a channel webhook in Discord

Discord's menus move around now and then. Look for these names if a step looks different.

1. Open the channel settings
  In Discord, hover over the channel and click the gear icon (**Edit Channel**).
2. Open Integrations
  Choose **Integrations**, then **Webhooks** (or **Create Webhook** if there are none yet).
3. Create the webhook
  Choose **New Webhook**. Give it a name, such as "Site email alerts", and optionally an avatar. Check that the channel shown is the right one.
4. Copy the URL
  Press **Copy Webhook URL**. It starts with `https://discord.com/api/webhooks/`.
5. Save in Discord
  Press **Save Changes** if Discord asks.

> **Treat the URL like a password:** Anyone with the webhook URL can post to that channel. If it ever leaks, delete the webhook in Discord and make a new one.

## Step 2: Add it in CRM-NG SMTP

1. Open the Alerts tab
  Go to **CRM-NG SMTP → Settings → Alerts**.
2. Find the chat section
  Scroll to **Chat and Incident Webhooks**.
3. Paste the URL
  Paste it into **Discord webhook URL**.
4. Save
  Press **Save Alert Settings**.

The box empties after saving and shows **Saved — leave blank to keep**. The URL is stored encrypted and not shown again. Paste a new URL to replace it; leave the box blank to keep the current one.

## Step 3: Test it

Try this on a staging site, or at a quiet time on your live site:

1. On the **General** tab, change your mailer's key or password to something wrong and save.
2. Send a test from **Tools → Email Test**.
3. Look for the alert in your Discord channel.
4. Restore the correct key or password, save, and send another test.

## What the message looks like

The webhook posts a plain text message:

```
[Your Site Name] WordPress email failed
Subject: Reset your password
From: no-reply@example.com
Error: (the error text from your mailer)
```

The message appears under the name and avatar you gave the webhook. One message is posted per failed email.

> **Discord's message limits:** Discord rejects messages longer than its character limit and slows down very fast bursts. A very long error message, or hundreds of failures in a minute, may mean some alerts never appear. Keep an email or other channel as well for busy sites.

## Troubleshooting

- **No message appears.** Check that the whole URL was pasted, that you pressed **Save Alert Settings**, and that the webhook still exists in the channel's **Integrations** page.
- **Your server blocks outbound requests.** Ask your host to allow HTTPS connections to `discord.com`.
- **An email failed but no alert came.** If the backup transport rescued the email, or **Do Not Send** blocked it, no alert is sent. See [Email failure alerts](https://catalystgroup.gg/docs/email-delivery/email-alerts/).
