# Error: Mail service not enabled (Gmail)

The connected Google account has no Gmail mailbox, so Google cannot send for it. Turn Gmail on for the account or connect one that has it.

This article is for sites using the **Google / Gmail** mailer where a send fails with "Mail service not enabled".

> **The error as you see it:** `Mail service not enabled`
>
> Shown by the **Google / Gmail** mailer, in the failed-send banner, in **Tools → Debug Events** and in the **Email Log**.

## What this error means

The authorization worked: Google knows the account and the plugin holds a valid token. But when the plugin asks Gmail to send, Google answers that this account has no Gmail service. A Google account can exist without a Gmail mailbox, and you cannot send through the Gmail API from an account that has none.

## Common causes

- **Gmail is turned off for the user in Google Workspace.** An admin can switch the Gmail service off for an organisational unit or group.
- **The Workspace user has no licence that includes Gmail**, or the licence was removed.
- **The account is a Google account made with a non-Gmail address** (for example, a Google account registered with an existing business address to use Google Ads or Analytics). Such accounts have no mailbox.
- **The Workspace subscription lapsed or the domain is not verified**, so Gmail is suspended for the whole domain.
- **Gmail was only just enabled.** Changes to service status can take a while to reach every Google system.

## How to fix

1. Check which account is connected
In WordPress go to **CRM-NG SMTP → Settings → General**. Under **Authorization**, note the address after **Connected as**.
2. Sign in to the account
Open `https://mail.google.com/` as that address. If you cannot open an inbox, the account has no Gmail.
3. Turn Gmail on (Workspace)
A Workspace admin opens `https://admin.google.com/` and goes to **Apps → Google Workspace → Gmail → Service status**. Select the organisational unit that contains the user and set the service to *ON*. Save.
4. Check the licence (Workspace)
In the Admin console, go to **Directory → Users**, open the user, and check **Licences**. Assign a licence that includes Gmail if it is missing.
5. Wait for the change
Give Google up to an hour (sometimes longer) to apply the change.
6. Or connect a different account
If the account will never have Gmail, press **Remove OAuth Connection**, then **Allow plugin to send emails using your Google account**, and sign in with an account that does have a Gmail mailbox.
7. Send a test
Go to **CRM-NG SMTP → Tools → Email Test**, fill in **Send To** and press **Send Email**.

## Verify it worked

The test page shows "Test email sent successfully! Check your inbox to confirm delivery." You will also find the test message in the **Sent** folder of the connected Gmail account.

## Notes

- With the Gmail mailer the From Email is always the connected account or one of its Gmail aliases. If you want mail to come from an address that has no Google mailbox, add it as an alias on an account that does.
- If your domain's mail is hosted somewhere other than Google, the Gmail mailer is the wrong choice. Pick the mailer for the service that hosts your mailbox; see [Choosing a mail service](https://catalystgroup.gg/docs/email-delivery/choose-a-mailer/).
