Error: Email sending limit reached
Your mail service or mailbox has hit its daily, monthly or per-second quota. Wait, raise the limit, or spread sending out with rate limiting.
Shown by any mailer with a quota (Amazon SES, Gmail, Brevo, Mailjet, Resend, SMTP2GO, MailerSend, Elastic Email and others)
The test result or the error log shows a message about a sending limit or quota, for example "sending limit exceeded", "daily quota exceeded" or "maximum sending rate exceeded".
This article is for site owners whose mail stopped because the provider's allowance ran out. It applies to every mailer that has a quota.
What this error means
Every mail service caps how much you can send. Caps can be per second, per day or per month, and free plans have the lowest. When you reach a cap the service refuses further messages until the period resets or the cap is raised. Nothing is broken; you have used up the allowance.
Common causes
- A free or trial plan with a small daily or monthly allowance, which is easy to reach with newsletters, order emails or form notifications.
- Amazon SES: the account is still in the sandbox, which has a very small daily quota, or the per-second sending rate was exceeded by a burst.
- Gmail / Google Workspace: the mailbox has a daily sending limit; consumer Gmail accounts are much lower than Workspace accounts.
- Microsoft 365: the mailbox has daily recipient and per-minute message limits.
- A burst from a plugin that sends to many people at once, such as a membership or events plugin.
- A form abused by bots, quietly using the allowance.
How to fix
- See how much you sent
Open CRM-NG SMTP → Email Reports or CRM-NG SMTP → Settings → Email Log to see the volume and which messages used it. Check for spam-like activity first.
- Check the limit at the provider
Amazon SES: the SES console's Account dashboard shows your daily quota and rate, and lets you request production access. Gmail/Workspace: the limit depends on account type; Workspace admins see sending issues in the Admin console. Other services show usage on their dashboard or billing page.
- Raise the limit
Request production access or a higher quota at SES, move to a plan with a bigger allowance, or move bulk mail (newsletters) to a dedicated service.
- Spread the sending
Go to CRM-NG SMTP → Settings → Misc and set Email Rate Limiting below your provider's caps. Emails over the limit are queued and sent when the allowance returns instead of failing.
- Send a test
When the period has reset or the limit is raised, send a test from CRM-NG SMTP → Tools → Email Test.
Verify it worked
The test page shows "Test email sent successfully! Check your inbox to confirm delivery." Over the next day, the Email Log shows no new failures with a limit message.
Notes
- Emails refused while over the limit are not retried automatically. If bodies are stored in the Email Log, you can open each failed entry and use Resend email once you have room.
- A backup SMTP transport on the Alerts tab can carry mail when the main mailer fails, but do not use it to get around a provider's limits.
- Optimize Email Sending on the Misc tab sends in the background; it helps page speed but does not raise any limit.
